On March 31, 2016, self advocates from the Simon Fraser and Vancouver regions came together to enjoy a day of presentations, workshops, and art.
The Self Advocate Leadership conference was a full-day event with over 60 self advocates in attendance and presentations by self advocates focused on employment, leadership, community, self-advocacy, and goal achievement.
Empowering Self Advocates to take Action Co-op facilitated a workshop on employment profiles, and BC People First presented and were available for membership sign up.
A poster contest for self advocate artists took place during the morning presentations and the day wrapped up with an art show display of all the posters created by attendees.
Wendy Rempel, a self advocate who was hired as the event coordinator, was instrumental in planning the event, along with support from practicum students Rebecca and Michelle.
This was the first Annual Vancouver Coastal Self Advocacy Leadership Conference and the sixth Self Advocate conference that CLBC’s Simon Fraser staff have supported.
CLBC’s Simon Fraser Community Council members helped coordinate and sponsor the poster contest and art show.
With this year’s success, early plans are already underway for next year’s event.
