After hiking disability and income assistance rates last week Shane Simpson was asked if his government would restore the disability bus pass program.
“We are going to move forward on that. It is just a matter of getting it right and that work is being done now. There is a conversation going on about that. I expect to be in a meeting with senior officials in the ministry. There are some options on how to address this and deal with this. We are looking at those options. We are looking at how we rectify this. We are looking at how we change the tone and tenure for people who are living poor.”
Simpson says he hopes the province will move soon to restore the program.
“I am hoping in the not to distant future to be able to go back to the Premier, the Finance minister, and cabinet to put some options in front of cabinet.”
The Liberals caused controversy by clawing back the $52 bus pass cost out of a $77 rate increase and initially also levied a $45 annual renewal fee before pulling a U-turn.
