Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, has made the following statement regarding Disability Employment Month:

“September marks the fourth annual Disability Employment Month here in British Columbia.

“This month is an opportunity for all British Columbians to celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce, and the employers and communities who support their success.

“Raising awareness encourages businesses to build inclusive, diverse workforces and highlights the many benefits that people with disabilities bring to the workplace.

“Throughout September, WorkBC Employment Services Centres, organizations and communities throughout the province will host open houses, job fairs, workshops and appreciation events to bring awareness to the benefits that people with disabilities bring to our growing economy.

“I encourage job seekers and employers to contact their local WorkBC office to learn about the resources and supports they have available.

“Tonight, to mark Disability Employment Month, Science World in Vancouver will have its dome glow blue and white. This will light up the skyscape in honour of people with disabilities and inclusive employers.

“And I would like to acknowledge the leadership and vision of the Presidents Group – business and community leaders that are creating more accessible, inclusive workplaces. Year round, they work to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities and have recently launched a website: http://www.accessibleemployers.ca/

“Inclusive employers create equal opportunity for people of all abilities. This gives people an opportunity for full participation and makes our communities more vibrant and welcoming.

“I hope you will each join me and the rest of British Columbia in celebrating the positive outcomes that people with disabilities bring to our province in so many ways.”
