In 2010, the BC government, along with both federal and municipal governments, committed to developing approximately 40 developments across British Columbia, creating new affordable rental options for seniors aged 55 and older and adults with disabilities.
Called the Seniors’ Rental Housing initiative, the program proposed an increase in the supply of new affordable rental housing – about 40 developments are open or opening soon around the province providing new one-bedroom apartments for individuals who are still able to live independently with an option for staying in the community they know and love.
These units have been made more affordable through contributions from all three levels of government. The initiative is a result of a $125.5-million joint investment under the Canada-British Columbia Affordable Housing Agreement, which includes funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan and by the Government of British Columbia. Most low-income seniors and persons with disabilities will pay 30% of the household income on rent.
The 1200 one-bedroom apartments will provide persons with disabilities who are able to live independently with an affordable option for staying in the communities they know and love. They will use either modular construction or wood frame construction to promote B.C. wood product use.
Available options for the Seniors’ Rental Housing initiative are determined by tenant income.
