Designs by Kara Lyn

unnamedWhen I was a kid, I lived on a tree farm and helped my dad a bit.

My mom did home school with me and taught me a bit of sign language, living skills, writing and a bit of reading. All my life I always did art and cooking.

Sometimes I helped my mom do cleaning. My family did lots of fun stuff together.

When I was growing up I always kept myself busy with my art work.

I would sit and do my art work watching TV and watching my favourite shows.

I lived with my parents until I was in my 20s and then I moved into a Homeshare.

I lived in one Homeshare for 9 years and then moved into another Homeshare where I still am today.

When I’m not at home I go to Vedder Services at Chilliwack Society for Community Living (CSCL).

They helped find me a job working with horses on a farm – which I love! It’s my dream job! In the future

I would like to make a career out of working with horses.

Also as part of the service I go to, we have art classes and I entered my art work into an art show 2 years in a row.

I wanted to make an adult colouring book from my drawings and my support workers and family worked with me to help make that happen. My support worker, Jen, went with me to a publisher where we learned that the owner knows my brother.

We gave that information to my mom and we went there again to find out what we needed to do to publish the book.

I had to make a cover for the book and choose 60 drawings for inside the book.

Once we brought everything in we waited to hear when it was ready – it seemed to take a long time.

Then it was ready! I was so excited and proud of myself.

Since it’s been published, I have been for interviews at Communitas, House of James bookstore, and even our local newspaper! I have also been featured on the CSCL website. I am selling my books for $10 each and have sold over 100 copies already.

They can be bought at the CSCL main office or you can email artlois@shaw.ca.

A portion of the profits from my book are being donated to CSCL, Communitas, and the Salvation Army.

A lot of people have asked me if they can buy my books for Christmas presents
