A CLBC-supported individual, Corey Stewart, 23, and his coach Brian Hammer had the chance to meet fellow para-athlete Minister Michelle Stilwell on October 16.
The two connected at Corey’s training home, the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club.
Corey won a gold medal in the local para-athletes paddling division for the Sprint Nationals.
Currently a member of the BC team, Corey is working on his time so he can join the national team and participate in next summer’s Paralympic Games in Rio.
To be successful in joining the national team, Corey needs to take eight seconds off his current time.
Minister Stilwell came to the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club to watch Corey and his coach, Brian Hammer, train.
She was also welcomed by Corey’s mother Paula Stewart, paddling club founder Rick Hammer, and Mary Jane Abbott, Executive Director of CanoeKayakBC.
Corey became involved with the local club in 2008. The club has an accessible dock, and welcomes many local community and school groups.
Founder Rick Hammer was inspired to form the club because he believes all members of the community should have the opportunity to participate in all paddle sports.
