My Love of Hockey and the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo

By Janelle Armstrong (Semiahmoo, B.C.)

On Saturday, October 6th, the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo hosted a Surrey Eagles Community Night. I helped to hand out information and enjoyed watching the game. At halftime, I got to go on the ice and shoot the puck into the net. It was hard walking on the ice, but I managed to score a goal!!! I also got a Tim Hortons’s card which made me happy!

I love hockey because it’s a fun game. I’ve been watching hockey since I was a little girl with my mom, dad, and 2 older brothers. My family and I watch games at home and go to games downtown. I like it when goals are scored, it’s my favourite. The teams I cheer on are the San Jose Sharks and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After the game, I got to interview #15 Max Mohagen. Mohagen plays forward for the Surrey Eagles hockey team. He was nice, cute and kind. He seemed tired and sweaty from the game. My grandfather’s name is also Max which I thought was cool. Here are the questions that I asked Max Mohagen during our interview.

JA: What was your favourite hockey team when you were a kid?

MM: Vancouver Canucks. I grew up here. I always cheered for my home team!

JA: How much do you practice in a week?

MM: 4 to 5 times a week! Practices are a couple of hours each. If we have multiple games we only practice 2 to 3 times a week.

JA: What is your favourite movie?

MM: Deadpool!

The Surrey Eagles Community Night hosted by Self Advocates of Semiahmoo was such a fun night; I can’t wait to do it again!
