My Route to Success

Story By Nokomis (Nikki) Isaac

My name is Nikki Isaac and I attend a Community Inclusion Program called Kyndred. (formerly DCLS)  I like interacting with people and I communicate with them utilizing a device that is adapted by CAYA to suit my needs.

I was at DCLS, where I first was employed as a door hanger, working with “Anthony at Your Service.” Then, a second job opportunity was presented as a paper route carrier.

Every Friday morning, I take on the responsibility of delivering newspapers to the local community. Rain or shine, wind or snow, I am ready and prepared to take my cart and deliver the papers on time. Along the way, I have made friends with the neighbors that patiently wait for me every Friday morning.

I became an excellent navigator, and I learned to quickly adapt to new routes when there are challenges like road closures or construction work. Moreover, I independently fund my own lunch outings, snacks, and activities with my earnings.

One of my favorite activities is transit outings, and I apply my navigation skills whenever I explore new communities. One of my favorite places to visit is the Bloedel Conservatory at Queen Elizabeth Park.

I am a crucial part of the North Delta community, and my hard work is appreciated by many people around me. Through my successful employment, I inspire and show my peers that anything is possible. I continue to independently learn new skills and open many opportunities!
