BC People First Self-Advocate & Member Liaison (Part-Time Contract Employment Position)
Job Summary:
The BCPF Self-Advocate & Member Liaison is an experienced self-advocate and optimistic people-person, located anywhere in British Columbia, who will:
- Maintain and encourage a positive membership culture at BCPF by connecting with existing, new, and potential BCPF Members across the province (mostly by phone; sometimes by email; rarely in-person).
- Use their lived experience as a self-advocate to share advice and resources with BCPF Members who need peer advocacy support.
- Provide outreach to BCPF members and the broader self-advocacy community in British Columbia to hear about their concerns and experiences.
- Document key findings and statistics and report back to BC People First President & Provincial Coordinator.
- Help identify members for spotlight features in the BCPF newsletter/blog and members who want to get more involved on a BCPF Committee or join the presentation team.
- List suggestions on ways BCPF can better support members and helps to inform BCPF priorities based on what is important to people.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The Self-Advocate & Member Liaison for BC People First Society will perform the following tasks and duties:
- Check and respond to BCPF emails, receive and review BCPF information related to the Society and its members via emails, e-newsletters, and phone calls from the Society, President and Provincial Coordinator in order to share this information with BCPF Members, people with disabilities, and Self-Advocates in BC.
- Be the first point of contact for members and prospective new members. Respond to potential member & current member inquiries via email and phone in a timely manner (usually within 2-3 days), referring to the Provincial Coordinator when needed.
- Complete approximately 20 “Liaison Calls” to BCPF Members each month and submitting the BCPF Liaison Call Report Form for each call.
- Fill out and send in written reports as requested by BCPF President or Provincial Coordinator
- Attend BCPF Advocacy Committee meetings and attend Board of Directors meetings as requested.
- Actively recruit BCPF Members across the province through professional and natural networking opportunities with peers and community members, directing people to the BCPF website to fill out the online membership enrolment form, or supporting them over the phone to do so.
- Understand that the expected outcomes of the Liaison position are to connect with BCPF Members in a positive and safe way while supporting their self-advocacy efforts and sharing information about BCPF activities and events.
- Support additional member support or recreation activities and projects initiated by the Board of Directors as required.
- Keep hours worked updated on the Liaison Hours Tracker Form (provided by BCPF) and summarize work completed each month, for invoicing purposes and to receive payment.
- Complete a check-in with the President and/or BCPF Hiring Committee and/or the Provincial Coordinator approximately every 3 months to discuss how things are going and how BCPF can improve its relationship with, and support of, the Self-Advocate & Member Liaison.
- Keep all BCPF information related to its Members and private society business confidential and secure at all times, including keeping any communication devices used for BCPF work password-protected, and using a secure filing and storage system for all BCPF documents.
Qualifications & Skills:
To meet the position requirements, the Self-Advocate & Member Liaison must have:
- Lived experience as a person with a disability and as a Self-Advocate for disability and human rights.
- Awareness of the People First and Self-Advocacy movements in BC and throughout history.
- The desire to end all forms of oppression in our society: ableism, sexism, ageism, racism; and increase community accessibility in all forms.
- A basic understanding of the United Nations Charter on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the Accessible Canada Act (ACA), and the BC Human Rights Code
- Leadership skills centered around connection, inspiration, positivity, inclusion, and networking.
- Efficient and professional communication skills, both written and oral; experience using computers and phones for communications purposes.
- The ability to form and maintain effective professional working relationships with BCPF members, board members, volunteers, advisors, community partners, and staff; both virtually and in person.

Skills in filling out reports, reviewing information and instructions, working both independently and as part of a team, and also asking for help when needed.
- Trustworthiness and the ability to keep confidential BCPF matters, BCPF member information, and other required business private and secure.
Salary & Details:
The BCPF Self-Advocate & Member Liaison is a part-time contract position from approximately May 17, 2021 to March 25, 2022:
- This position reports to both the BCPF President & Provincial Coordinator.
- As a Contractor role, BCPF will not provide any benefits or a T4 or deduct any taxes for this position. It is up to the individual to report and file appropriately with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
- The Liaison will provide and use their own computer, telephone with long-distance calling in BC, office space, and office supplies to perform duties; they will use the email address bcpfmembership@gmail.com for all BCPF work and BCPF Member e-communications.
- The Liaison is to invoice the BCPF Treasurer and Provincial Coordinator for the previous month’s hours in the first week of each month (BCPF will provide a template for hours tracking and invoice completion).
- The President & Provincial Coordinator will offer guidance and provide additional support to the Self-Advocate & Member Liaison when needed or requested.
- Hours per month: 15-20 hours per month (May 2021 to March 2022)
- Wage: $25.00 per hour
