Mother and Daughter Promoting Inclusion for All
I interviewed Lynda Honing this month. She has a 14-year-old daughter, Isabelle, who lives with Down Syndrome.
Isabelle has 2 older brothers and they live in Surrey, BC.
When I came across their story on Inclusion BC’s Facebook link, I felt so inspired, I felt it was important to interview Lynda. Lynda and Isabelle were on a ferry going to Pender Island. Isabelle said ‘Hi’ to a passenger sitting beside her and was ignored.
This experience was upsetting to them, so Lynda came up with an idea of starting a movement called #beinclusive on Facebook. Lynda explained she felt the saying “be inclusive” was a more positive way of saying things, instead of “Don’t Bully”. Lynda and Isabelle were pictured on Facebook wearing a blue T-Shirt that says #beinclusive on it.
They were surprised at the positive response they got.
