How I am an Athlete and Volunteer with Special Olympics

My name is Michaela Robinson.

I have been involved in Special Olympics for the past 18 years.

The Special Olympic athletes oath is, Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. When I first joined Special Olympics I had not reached my growth spurt yet, so I was very small. No wait, I am still very small, but I did not let my size hold me back.

A funny thing happened to me during my first competition. As I was just finishing my ribbon routine and went to take a bow, I tripped over my ribbon and fell to the ground. Boy was I ever embarrassed. Fortunately, my dad was filming me and got it all on camera.

I love being an athlete. I also love being a spokesperson and a volunteer for the organization. It has given me a chance to give back to my community. I have had many opportunities to volunteer to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics and the athletes they support.  The many hours I spent being a Special Olympic volunteer at Staples and was a big part of me being hired by them in a paid job.

The friends I have made in Special Olympics are true friends and will be a part of my life forever. I have been supported by coaches, teachers, peers, friends and family who have encouraged me to become involved and to be true to myself, making me the best that I can be. I have learned to define who I am by my abilities and not by my disabilities. As a result of working hard with Special Olympics, I now have the confidence to try new things and to face challenges with a positive attitude.
