All About Being On Your Own

by Tara Leroux

Hi, I want to tell you all about when I came from Terrace to live in Vancouver to make some new friends.

It did not plan out very well for me. It’s like what I went through a long time ago in Terrace and here I am doing it all over. I don’t want that again! So I decided to do something about it & make some changes.

I did some talking with my family about what I can do to get out there to make a good life for myself.

They said, “Why don’t you join up with Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network? They can help you get out and make new friends like joining up with a canoeing group, a book club, or taking vacations”. Going canoeing, to a book club, and going on vacation are the best ways to learn how to make friends.

When I went to Whistler with Semiahmoo House Society last summer some of the fun things we did were going for a walk round the Village, shopping for gifts, going for a long walk at the lake and seeing the beautiful views up there.

We also went out for dinner to the Old Spaghetti Factory and danced at Buffalo Bills.

If it wasn’t for my family who helped me learn how to go out on my own I would not have gone on vacation to Whistler.

I would not have learned how to get along with others, like sharing a hotel room with other people, or going to new places with the new friends I made on this trip.

You have to ask yourself what do you want in life? Do you want some new friends or keep the ones that aren’t friends who treat you like you don’t belong in your group? I think you should talk to your family about how to make a change in your life.
