Premier’s statement in honour of Canada Day

Victoria Monday, July 1, 2019 8:00 AM

Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement to recognize Canada Day:

“Today, the Province joins people gathering together in communities throughout British Columbia and across Canada to celebrate Canada Day.

“Canada is known for its dynamic beauty, diverse cultures and the people who have chosen to make this country their home. Canada Day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate our diversity by honouring the values of equality, inclusion and a welcoming spirit that unite us all as Canadians.

“As we work together to build a more inclusive and multicultural society, we must also recognize our responsibility to right the historical wrongs that continue to affect the lives of Indigenous peoples in this country.

“All Canadians have a role in advancing reconciliation, understanding our common history and supporting those who are leading this important work.

“On Canada Day, we promise to keep moving forward on this journey together – and together we will create lasting change and a better future for everyone in B.C.

“Happy Canada Day!”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Canada Day

Ottawa, Ontario – July 1, 2019

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Canada Day:

“Happy birthday, Canada!

“Whether you’re watching the fireworks, firing up the grill, or getting outside with your kids, today, we celebrate the amazing place we call home.

“This year, we have a lot to celebrate. In the last four years, Canadians have created more than a million new jobs. The unemployment rate is at its lowest since the 1970s. And across the country, 825,000 Canadians have been lifted out of poverty. There’s never been more opportunity, or more progress to share in. And that’s thanks to Canadians, like you.

“We’re an example to the world because of the way we treat each other. Canadians are neighbours helping neighbours, small businesses lifting communities up, and men and women in uniform keeping us safe. We’re families opening hearts and homes to newcomers in need – and friends who might as well be family. That spirit is at the heart of our success, and the story of Canada.

“We know we still have work to do. Not everyone benefits equally from Canada’s success. We need to change that, and make sure we all move forward, together. That means supporting Canada’s workers, creating more opportunity, and growing the middle class. And it means fighting climate change, so we can leave our kids a healthy world.

“I know we’ll step up to the challenges we’re facing, just like we’ve always done – because no challenge is too great, if we face it together. From my family to yours, happy Canada Day.”

Here some of the things why Canada Day celebrated

Canada Day History

Canada Day celebrates Canada’s independence from Britain on July 1, 1867. Prior to 1867, Canada was a British North American Colony composed of present day Ontario and Quebec. On July 1st, 1867, Her Majesty Queen Victoria of Great Britain officially proclaimed the Confederation of Canada’s founding provinces, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and the new Dominion of Canada became a self-governing body within the British realm.

Although it was a self-governing body, Canada did not attain legislative independence from Britain until the signing of the Statute of Westminster on December 11, 1931. July 1st, originally named Dominion Day, was renamed Canada Day and made an official statutory holiday in 1983.
