Kaven and Amen Saran are among a growing number of people who have joined the ranks of the self-employed. Together, they own and operate a small carpet cleaning business, called “The Blind Carpet Cleaner” situated in Surrey, BC.
Kaven is blind and hard of hearing from a rare eye disease known as retinitis pigmentosa, and usher’s syndrome, but he doesn’t let his physical disabilities get in his way.
Using teamwork, both husband and wife, with the help of their qualified employees, have successfully been helping homeowners by cleaning carpets around the lower mainland since 2014. Like most successful entrepreneurs, the Saran’s have built a business based on their personal passion and is the ultimate platform of independence.
As a young child, Kaven always had a knack for cleaning. He would assist his mom in the household and always be her right hand when it came to getting things done. With losing his sight gradually year by year until blindness overcame, Kaven learned to find control and independence through his almost compulsive nature to make spaces feel cleaner and smell fresher.
When going into clients homes, Kaven has the ability to use his heightened sense of smell to determine where the cleaning is needed most. It’s almost like a super power!
Running a business requires a lot of organization, and along with several speech-accessible devices, vision impairment resources and technology, the Saran’s have worked hard to get every job done.
Not all things come easy at the first try, so with practice, patience, sighted volunteers and imperative blindness awareness research, there is no challenge together that these two cannot overcome.
